Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Wednesday paid solemn tribute to police martyrs on the occasion of Police Commemoration Day, remembering their courage, dedication and patriotism as an enduring source of inspiration for Jammu and Kashmir and the nation. He reaffirmed the commitment to the welfare of the martyrs’ families and called for intensified action against terrorism, drug trafficking and crime.
Police Commemoration Day is observed across India on October 21 every year to honour police personnel who laid down their lives in the line of duty. The day marks the supreme sacrifice of ten police personnel who were killed in an ambush by Chinese troops at Hot Springs in Ladakh on October 21, 1959.
The Lieutenant Governor expressed deep gratitude to the police martyrs and conveyed his heartfelt sympathies to their families. He said no assistance could fully compensate for the loss of a loved one, but it was the nation’s responsibility to honour their sacrifice through meaningful care, dignity and continued support.
Acknowledging the distinguished service of the Jammu and Kashmir Police, Sinha said the force has shown exemplary courage and discipline in maintaining law and order, combating terrorism and assisting people during emergencies and natural disasters. He noted that thousands of police personnel have laid down their lives in the fight against terrorism and that their sacrifices would always be remembered by the nation.
Emphasising that the police uniform symbolises service, responsibility and sacrifice, the Lieutenant Governor said public safety, timely justice and the protection of citizens must remain the foremost priorities. He called for sustained efforts to combat terrorism, strengthen peace and stability, protect women and children, prevent crimes against vulnerable sections and intensify action against drug trafficking and narco-terrorism.
Reaffirming the commitment to peace and progress in the Union Territory, he urged citizens to uphold unity, communal harmony and mutual trust while remaining vigilant against forces seeking to disturb peace and stability.
Police Commemoration Day also serves as a reminder of the courage of those who safeguard the nation under challenging circumstances, and as an occasion to acknowledge the sacrifices made by their families, who carry the burden of loss long after the ceremonies end. In Jammu and Kashmir, where policing has been closely tied to the fight against militancy for decades, the day carries a particular emotional weight for many households and communities.
The Lieutenant Governor also commended the Jammu and Kashmir Police, the Indian Army and the Central Armed Police Forces for their unwavering commitment to national security, public service and the protection of the country’s unity and integrity.
