The initial public offering of Jio Platforms drew strong demand across investor categories as it opened on Wednesday, with the share sale being fully subscribed within hours in what has been described as a record response.
The IPO’s grey market premium stood at 22.34 per cent, or 251 rupees per share, as of 4:05 pm on Wednesday. Based on the upper end of the price band of 1,119 rupees per share, the estimated listing price works out to about 1,370 rupees per share. Trading in the shares is scheduled to begin on October 28.
The grey market premium is an unofficial indicator of how much investors are willing to pay above the issue price before a stock formally lists. It is based on informal over-the-counter dealings, is not regulated by stock exchanges and can change quickly, so it offers only a rough sign of market sentiment rather than a guarantee of listing gains. Investors are generally advised to rely on the offer documents and their own assessment rather than on grey market figures when taking decisions.
The quick subscription on the opening day points to strong appetite for large technology and telecom-linked offerings in the domestic market. A fully subscribed issue means that bids received exceed the number of shares on offer, although final allotment depends on demand in each investor category once the issue closes.
Meanwhile, the Indian rupee appreciated by 29 paise to 94.62 against the US dollar in early trade on Wednesday. The gain was supported by positive sentiment in the domestic market and by the Reserve Bank of India. Analysts said the currency also received a boost from foreign dollar inflows tied to the Jio IPO, reflecting the interest the offering has drawn from overseas participants.
Large public issues can influence currency movements because foreign investors who subscribe need to bring in dollars, which are then converted into rupees. A steady flow of such funds tends to support the domestic currency, at least in the short term, though the direction of the rupee also depends on factors such as crude oil prices, global interest rates and trade flows.
Market watchers will now track subscription levels in the retail, institutional and non-institutional categories as the issue progresses, and the listing on October 28 will show whether the early enthusiasm translates into gains on the exchanges. As with any market-linked investment, returns are not assured, and prospective investors would do well to weigh the risks carefully.
