Mirwaiz-e-Kashmir Dr Moulvi Mohammad Umar Farooq has expressed deep grief over the demise of Mehraj-ud-Din Malik, describing him as a close and longstanding associate of the Mirwaiz family. The cleric conveyed his condolences in person on Saturday, visiting the bereaved household in the Srinagar locality of Soura.
The Mirwaiz travelled to the family’s residence at Usmanabad, 90 Feet Road, Soura, where he met the deceased’s son, Mohammad Yaqoob Malik, along with other members of the family. He shared in their sorrow and offered words of comfort during the visit, which reflected the personal bond that had existed between the two households over many years.
Recalling the late Mehraj-ud-Din Malik’s close association with the Jama Masjid and the Mirwaiz family, the cleric paid tribute to a man who had remained devoted to the institution and to those connected with it. The Jama Masjid in Srinagar’s old city has for generations served as the principal seat of the Mirwaiz, and its circle of supporters, caretakers and well-wishers has long formed a close community in which personal loyalties often span several decades. Mehraj-ud-Din Malik was counted among the people who stood by that circle.
The Mirwaiz expressed his sympathies with the bereaved family in what he called this hour of grief. He said the loss was deeply felt, and that the departed had left behind a legacy of sincerity and steadfast association which would be remembered by those who knew him.
He offered Fateha for the departed soul and prayed to Almighty Allah to grant the deceased the highest place in Jannat-ul-Firdous. The cleric also prayed that the family be blessed with patience and strength to bear what he termed an irreparable loss.
Condolence visits of this kind hold a significant place in Kashmiri social life. Community leaders, clerics and neighbours traditionally call on the bereaved household in person, recite Fateha together and remain with the family through the days of mourning. Such gestures are widely regarded as a mark of respect for the departed and as a source of moral support for those left behind.
Details regarding the funeral arrangements and the age of the deceased were not immediately available. Members of the family said they were grateful to the Mirwaiz for taking the time to visit them and for his prayers, as relatives and neighbours continued to gather at the residence in Soura to offer their condolences.
