Srinagar: The National Institute of Technology (NIT) Srinagar on Monday marked the start of Vigilance Awareness Week 2026 with an integrity pledge ceremony near the Mian Faculty Block, renewing the institute’s public commitment to transparency, accountability and ethical conduct in institutional life.
The week-long observance runs from October 26 to November 1 under the theme “Probity for Prosperity”. The theme underlines a simple proposition that sits at the heart of good governance: economic and social progress is only durable when public institutions function honestly, and when those who run them are answerable for their decisions.
The pledge was administered in the presence of Registrar Prof. Atikur Rehman and Chief Vigilance Officer and Dean Faculty Welfare, Prof. Manzoor Ahmad Ahangar. Heads of Departments, Heads of Centres, faculty members, administrative officers and members of the non-teaching staff took part in the ceremony, which brought the institute’s academic and administrative wings together on a single platform.
Participants reaffirmed their resolve to uphold the highest standards of integrity, to ensure transparency in official dealings and to discharge their responsibilities with honesty and accountability. The programme was designed to reinforce the idea that preventing corruption is not the task of a single office or agency, but a collective responsibility shared by every member of an institution.
For a premier technical institution such as NIT Srinagar, which handles significant public funds for research, procurement, infrastructure and student services, such an exercise carries practical meaning. Clear procedures, open decision making and a culture of accountability directly affect the quality of education, the credibility of the institution and the trust that students, parents and the wider public place in it.
Vigilance Awareness Week is observed every year under the aegis of the Central Vigilance Commission (CVC), the apex integrity body of the Government of India. Government departments, public sector undertakings, banks and educational institutions across the country organise pledge ceremonies, awareness drives, lectures and competitions during the week to promote ethical values and strengthen efforts against corruption.
In Jammu and Kashmir, institutions have increasingly used the occasion to speak openly about integrity, grievance redress and the responsible use of public resources. The ceremony at NIT Srinagar adds to that growing emphasis on clean administration in the region’s leading centres of learning.
Observers note that pledges, while symbolic, serve as a reminder of the standards that public servants and academic leaders are expected to meet every day, not merely during one week of the year. The test of such commitments lies in their consistent application in routine decisions, from recruitment and purchases to examinations and admissions.
As the week progresses, further awareness activities are expected to be held, with the institute encouraging staff and students to remain vigilant and to report wrongdoing through the proper channels.
