The Union Cabinet has created a pathway for all Agniveers to be absorbed into the Defence Forces, approving another engagement period of two years for the remaining 75 percent of those who complete their initial tenure. The decision follows a performance assessment of Agniveers by the Defence Forces over the last four years, which yielded positive feedback.

Under the framework, 25 percent of Agniveers will, based on merit, be offered regular employment in the Defence Forces, as envisaged earlier. The remaining 75 percent will be offered a further two-year engagement, subject to their willingness. On completing that period, all Agniveers will be enrolled as regular soldiers, subject to their willingness and to meeting the selection criteria.

An objective assessment based on organisational requirements and operational efficiency, the government said, has brought out the strong performance of Agniveers in skills, motivation, physical fitness and technological prowess. The additional engagement period was approved on the recommendation of the Indian Defence Forces and followed what it called deliberate, reasoned and elaborate evaluation and feedback. The stated aim is to align the aspirations of Agniveers with organisational efficiency.

Reviewing four years of the Agnipath Scheme, the government listed several achievements. These include a wider footprint of recruitment across the districts of the country, a more standardised and transparent recruitment process, and very high levels of physical fitness, morale, motivation, competitive spirit and discipline. It also pointed to enhanced skills, technological adaptability and education within the service, and to the opening up of various branches of the Defence Forces to women.

On the strength of these outcomes, the Agnipath scheme will continue. The second engagement period will carry higher remuneration, an enhanced Seva Nidhi package and seniority benefits. With the extra two years followed by induction of all Agniveers as regular soldiers, the Cabinet has, in effect, created a pathway for the absorption of every Agniveer into the Defence Forces.

The Agnipath scheme, introduced in 2022, replaced the earlier system of long-term recruitment with a short-tenure model for non-officer ranks. It drew considerable public debate at the time over career security for those who would not be retained after their term, which is why questions about the future of Agniveers have remained prominent. Today’s decision addresses that concern directly by offering a defined route to regular service for those who are willing and meet the criteria.

For young people in Jammu and Kashmir and across the country who see the armed forces as a career, the clarity on long-term prospects is likely to be closely watched. The government has framed the change as an improvement rather than a revision of the scheme, retaining its core structure while lengthening the engagement and widening the prospects for absorption.
