Mirwaiz-e-Kashmir Dr Moulvi Mohammad Umar Farooq has expressed deep sorrow over the demise of Abdul Rashid Beigh of Bota Kadal, Srinagar. He paid tribute to Beigh’s social contributions and recalled his close, longstanding association with the Mirwaiz family and the historic Jamia Masjid Srinagar.
The Mirwaiz could not attend the funeral because of his continued house detention for the past four days. He conveyed his condolences to the deceased’s sons, Parvez Ahmad Beigh, Altaf Ahmad Beigh and Meraj-ud-Din Beigh, and prayed for the forgiveness of the departed and a place for him in Jannat-ul-Firdous.
The Mirwaiz also mourned the passing of Haji Mohammad Sultan Kenu of Saraf Kadal and the wife of Riyaz Ahmad Baba of Wazapora, Srinagar. He offered condolences to their families, including Tariq Ahmad Kenu, Javaid Ahmad Kenu and Riyaz Ahmad Baba, and prayed for the forgiveness and eternal peace of the deceased.
Separately, Mirwaiz-e-Kashmir expressed deep grief over the demise of the maternal uncle of Mufti Abid Hussain Naik, senior teacher at Jamia Ashraf-ul-Uloom, Hyderpora, and founder and Nazim of Idara Wahdat-ul-Makatib Jammu and Kashmir. He prayed to Allah Almighty to grant the departed soul a place in Jannat-ul-Firdous and to bestow patience and strength on Mufti Sahib and the bereaved family to bear the loss.
Condolence messages from the Mirwaiz are a customary feature of Kashmir’s social and religious life, where the head of the Anjuman Auqaf Jama Masjid is regarded as a spiritual leader whose words of consolation carry significance for many families, particularly those with long ties to the Jamia Masjid and its community in the old city. The mention of Beigh’s association with the Mirwaiz family reflects the personal bonds that have connected several Srinagar households to the institution across generations.
The statement also noted that the Mirwaiz was unable to be present at the funeral, a reference to the house detention that has been in place for four consecutive days. His absence from funerals and gatherings has become a recurring subject in recent days, and the Muttahida Majlis-e-Ulama has already postponed a planned district-level meeting at Bandipora citing the restrictions. The authorities have not offered a public explanation in the statement issued on the matter.
In his messages, the Mirwaiz prayed for patience for the bereaved families, a theme that runs through such condolences. The families named in the statement are residents of Bota Kadal, Saraf Kadal, Wazapora and Hyderpora, all localities in Srinagar with long-standing connections to the Jamia Masjid and its religious institutions.
