Srinagar, April 3: The Jammu and Kashmir Home Department, which falls under the jurisdiction of Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha has ordered a time-bound magisterial inquiry into a controversial encounter in Ganderbal that left a young man dead, triggering widespread concern and calls for justice.

The incident took place on April 1 in Arhama, where Raashid Ahmad Mughal, a resident of Chunatwaliwar Lar, was killed in what officials described as an encounter. In response, authorities have directed the District Magistrate Ganderbal to conduct a thorough and impartial probe to ascertain the facts and circumstances surrounding the killing. The report has been sought within seven days.

As the deeply distressing news of the killing emerged, the family of the deceased claimed that Raashid was a part time computer operator with no links to militancy and alleged that he was picked up and killed in cold blood. The incident has revived painful memories of past encounters, intensifying demands for accountability and justice.

Reacting strongly, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, addressing worshippers at Jamia Masjid, said that the family is seeking justice through an impartial probe and expressed hope that this time accountability will be ensured. He added that past experiences do not inspire confidence, but noted that with reports of the Lieutenant Governor himself ordering an inquiry, there is hope that those responsible will be identified and punished.

He also condemned the reported denial of the body to the family for burial, calling it inhuman and unacceptable.
