Apr 01, New Delhi: The census process has officially commenced across the country from April 1, marking one of the world’s largest administrative and statistical exercises.

Census 2027 will be conducted in two phases, covering every household and individual. The government has approved a budget of ₹11,718.24 crore for the exercise.

The first phase, House-listing and Housing Census, will run from April 1 to September 30, 2026. It will capture data on housing conditions, amenities and household assets.

The second phase, Population Enumeration, will be conducted in February 2027, with some hill states and Union Territories covered earlier.

This will be India’s first fully digital census, with an option for self-enumeration. Citizens can submit details online ahead of the door-to-door survey, while enumerators will use a mobile application for data collection.

Around 30 lakh officials, including enumerators and supervisors, will be deployed for the exercise, supported by robust digital security protocols.

The enthusiasm surrounding this major initiative is also reflected among artists. Sand artist and Padma Shri awardee Sudarsan Pattnaik created a sculpture at Niladri Beach in Puri to raise awareness about Census 2027, India’s first digital census.

The Mritunjay Kumar Narayan, Registrar General and Census Commissioner has emphasised that personal data collected will remain confidential under the Census Act and will not be shared or used for legal purposes.

Census data plays a crucial role in policy formulation and planning, guiding schemes related to education, health, employment and basic services. The government has urged citizens to provide accurate information to support effective national development planning.
