Government degree colleges in Jammu and Kashmir are facing a severe admission crisis, with many institutions having a negligible number of students.
According to official data, two colleges do not have a single student, while five colleges have less than 20 students and eight colleges have less than 30 students. Similarly, 14 colleges have less than 50 students and 24 colleges have less than 100 students, while 13 colleges have an enrollment between 100 and 300.
Due to non-admission in Government Degree Colleges Baghi Dilawar Khan and Chitta Singh Pura, they have been placed under Government Degree College Anantnag and SP College Srinagar respectively.
The House was informed that the number of students in several colleges is extremely low, such as only 14 students in MA Road Srinagar College of Education, while the number in other institutions also remained between 10 and 30.
According to the government, although a total of 143 degree colleges are operational, there has been a decline in admissions in recent years. Steps like the introduction of a central admission portal and new subjects have been taken to address this.
Officials say that after these reforms, admissions have improved in the academic year 2025-26, especially in Anantnag district, which recorded an increase of about 8.11 percent.
