Kashmir’s tourism sector is on a robust upward trajectory in 2026, with official data showing that over 5.21 lakh tourists arrived in the Valley between January and mid-May — a figure that reflects growing confidence in the region as a safe and accessible travel destination. Of the total arrivals, 5,13,286 were domestic tourists while 8,195 were foreign visitors.
The Jammu-Srinagar National Highway via Banihal remained the busiest corridor, handling nearly 2.95 lakh domestic travellers. Srinagar Airport saw over 1.47 lakh domestic arrivals during the period, while rail services contributed significantly, with more than 55,997 tourists arriving through Nowgam railway station alone.
April proved to be the peak month so far, recording 1,32,828 visitors including 2,289 foreign tourists — the highest monthly figure of the year. Officials attribute the sustained growth to improved multi-modal connectivity, including the expansion of rail and air links to the Valley, which have reduced travel time and opened Kashmir to visitors who previously found access difficult.
The numbers come amid an ongoing India-Pakistan ceasefire period following last year’s tensions, and reflect a deliberate post-conflict normalisation effort by the administration. The early signs of the summer tourism season are encouraging, though the Valley will be closely watching weather patterns and road conditions as the high season picks up pace.
