September 9 Delhi meeting puts protest plans on hold; fresh agitation warned if talks fail

Srinagar: In a significant political development in Ladakh, the proposed 15-day “Peace and Justice Padyatra” from Kargil to Leh has been deferred ahead of a crucial meeting between a Ladakh delegation and representatives of the Union Ministry of Home Affairs in New Delhi on September 9.
Climate activist and member of the Leh Apex Body, Sonam Wangchuk, said the march was being postponed in view of the upcoming talks. He indicated that the protest could be revived if the meeting fails to deliver meaningful progress on Ladakh’s long-pending demands.
The proposed march was scheduled to begin from Kargil on September 10 and conclude in Leh on September 24. Organisers had planned to use the mobilisation to press for statehood, constitutional safeguards under the Sixth Schedule and other demands concerning Ladakh’s political and administrative future.
Wangchuk said there would be no need for the march if the talks produce concrete results. However, if the government once again resorts to delay or fails to address the core issues, protesters could return to the streets.
With the September 9 meeting now becoming the immediate focus, the outcome of the talks could determine whether Ladakh’s agitation enters a new phase or receives a fresh political opening.
