Srinagar, September 7, 2026: The 44th death anniversary of revered religious scholar, social reformer, jurist and founder of Anjuman Sharia Shian, Ayatollah Aga Syed Yusuf Mousavi (RA), was observed at the Tebyan Quranic Research Institute, Hassanabad, Srinagar, with a panel discussion on his religious, legal, social, educational and political legacy.
The programme, titled “Ayatollah Aga Syed Yusuf Mosavi’s reformist path in power structures: from the bench of judgement to the arena of politics,” brought together religious scholars, intellectuals, journalists, researchers and community members.
Speakers included Dr. Manzoor Ahmad Thokar, Aga Syed Mozafer Rizvi, Journalist Irshad Hussain and Social Activist Hakim Sohail Abbas. The programme began with the recitation of the Holy Quran by internationally renowned reciter Aijaz Hussain Sofi.
Dr. Manzoor Ahmad Thokar outlined the history and institutional development of Anjuman Sharia Shian, highlighting its role in addressing religious, social and community affairs. He also stressed the need to strengthen its grassroots outreach and institutional mechanisms.
Journalist Irshad Hussain highlighted Aga Syed Yusuf Mousavi’s political, socio-economic and institutional contributions, particularly his role in establishing and functioning Sharia courts in Kashmir. He said his literary and intellectual contributions should be digitally documented to introduce the younger generation, particularly Gen Z, to his legacy. Irshad also said the concept of Wilayat-e-Faqih was introduced in Kashmir through Aga Syed Yusuf Mousavi’s efforts and influence.
Hujjat-ul-Islam wa Muslimeen Agha Syed Muzaffar Hussain Rizvi recalled his brief association with Bab-ul-Ilm Seminary before Aga Syed Yusuf’s demise and spoke about his scholarly legacy. He highlighted Aga Sahib’s handwritten works, particularly Iqadh-ul-Ibad, and recalled the launch of the monthly journal Al-Rashad nearly seven decades ago, which attracted contributions from scholars across the world. He also recalled incidents reflecting Aga Sahib’s piety, asceticism and spiritual stature.
Hakim Sohail Abbas highlighted Aga Syed Yusuf Mousavi’s scholarship, leadership, reformist approach and role in strengthening the community through institutions such as Babul Ilim. He stressed that institutions established by Aga Sahib should be equipped with modern, technology-based infrastructure.
Participants emphasised the need to document Ayatollah Aga Syed Yusuf Mousavi’s life and works through scholarly research, archival efforts and oral histories, particularly in the fields of religion, jurisprudence, social reform and political thought.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Aga Syed Abid Hussaini, who expressed gratitude to all scholars, intellectuals, journalists, researchers and participants.
