A pall of grief descended over the corridors of Jammu and Kashmir’s civil services on Thursday as news broke of the untimely death of Mohammad Younis Mir, a young and promising officer of the Jammu and Kashmir Administrative Service. Mir, who belonged to the 2019-batch of JKAS officers in the Junior Scale, had been serving as Assistant Director in the Handicrafts and Handloom wing of the Industries and Commerce Department at the time of his passing. He died after a brief illness, cutting short what had been an already distinguished early career in public service.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah was among the first to express his grief, issuing a heartfelt condolence message in which he conveyed his profound sorrow over the loss. The Chief Minister extended his deepest sympathies to the bereaved family, relatives, friends, and colleagues of the departed officer, praying that they find the strength and fortitude to bear what he described as an irreparable loss. He also prayed for eternal peace for the departed soul.
The death of a young civil servant, barely a few years into service, inevitably stirs reflection on the fragility of life and the sacrifices that government officers and their families make in dedicating themselves to public administration. Mir’s posting in the Industries and Commerce Department placed him at the intersection of one of the most culturally significant sectors of the Kashmiri economy — the handloom and handicrafts industry — a space where quality administration directly touches the livelihoods of thousands of artisans.
The JKAS is one of the premier administrative services of Jammu and Kashmir, and its young officers are among the most educated and motivated entrants into public service. The loss of a 2019-batch officer at such an early stage is felt deeply across the service cadre.
The government and civil services fraternity of Jammu and Kashmir will mourn the passing of Mohammad Younis Mir, a young officer whose career — though brief — was already marked by dedication. His colleagues in the Industries and Commerce Department, as well as the wider JKAS community, have shared their grief and condolences with his family during this difficult hour.
