Union Home Minister Amit Shah chaired a high-level security review meeting in New Delhi on Friday to assess the state of preparations for the Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra 2026, reaffirming the Central Government’s full commitment to ensuring the highest levels of security and an unobstructed pilgrimage experience for all devotees. The meeting brought together the topmost names in India’s security and administrative establishment, reflecting the gravity with which the Centre approaches the yatra each year.
In a clear directive to all agencies, Shah called for the creation of an impregnable, multi-layered security grid along the entire pilgrimage route — to be built through the coordinated deployment of the Central Armed Police Forces, Jammu and Kashmir Police, and all other security agencies. He underscored the importance of leveraging modern surveillance and monitoring technologies, including drones, CCTV networks, and advanced monitoring systems, to ensure round-the-clock situational awareness.
The Home Minister also directed that senior officers from both the CAPFs and J&K Police maintain continuous on-ground presence at camp sites throughout the pilgrimage route, rather than operating purely from command centres. This ground-up monitoring approach is intended to ensure rapid response in the event of any security incident or emergency.
Beyond security, Shah emphasised the importance of comprehensive facilities for pilgrims — including seamless registration processes, adequate accommodation, accessible healthcare services, and robust disaster management systems. In a notable additional directive, he ordered the registration of local people and animals associated with the yatra, with QR-code-enabled identity cards to be issued and health examination camps to be organised for pilgrims’ animals.
The meeting was attended by Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir Manoj Sinha, and the Directors General of the CRPF, BSF, CISF, ITBP, and SSB. The breadth of the attendance underscored that the Amarnath Yatra is treated as a national security and administrative priority at the highest level.
The Amarnath Yatra 2026 will commence on July 3 and conclude on August 28.
