Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Thursday held a substantive meeting with the United States Ambassador to India, Sergio Gor, in New Delhi, covering a broad range of bilateral security issues including counter-terrorism, counter-narcotics cooperation and border security.
Shah, in a post on social media following the meeting, said that the two sides held a detailed discussion on further strengthening cooperation between India and the United States in the field of security, with particular emphasis on joint efforts to combat terrorism and disrupt narcotics trafficking networks. The Home Minister highlighted that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India remains firmly committed to advancing the India-U.S. Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership and ensuring that the relationship delivers tangible benefits for the people of both nations.
Ambassador Gor, speaking on the meeting, said that both sides discussed ways to strengthen cooperation in combating terrorism, protecting citizens from narcotics and illegal drugs, securing borders and ensuring that criminals face justice. The US Ambassador’s characterisation of the discussions underscored the practical and operational dimension of the India-US security dialogue, which has evolved significantly in recent years beyond policy declarations toward more concrete joint action.
The meeting takes place against the backdrop of a deepening India-US partnership across multiple domains, including defence, technology, trade and intelligence sharing. In the security sphere, the two countries have steadily expanded their cooperation on counter-terrorism, particularly in the context of cross-border terrorism affecting India, and on disrupting the narcotics supply chains that feed both domestic drug crises and the financing of criminal and terrorist organisations.
Shah’s dual role as Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation gives him a unique portfolio that encompasses both internal security and grassroots economic development. His engagement with the US Ambassador on security matters is consistent with the extensive diplomatic interface that India’s security establishment has developed with American counterparts over the past decade.
The meeting signals continued high-level attention to the India-US security relationship, even as both countries navigate a complex and evolving global strategic environment.
