The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad’s Jammu University unit launched an indefinite dharna at Fountain Plaza on Thursday, registering its strong opposition to a proposed fee hike that the student organisation says will place an unsustainable financial burden on students from middle-income and economically weaker families.
The ABVP, which is the largest student organisation in India and is closely associated with the ideological current of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, called upon the university administration to immediately reconsider the revision. The student body’s central argument is that affordable access to higher education is a non-negotiable right and that any increase in fees, if not accompanied by commensurate scholarship and financial assistance mechanisms, effectively shuts the door on a significant section of deserving students.
The Jammu University, formally known as the University of Jammu, is one of the two major central universities in the union territory and caters to a large student body drawn from across the region, including many students from rural and semi-urban backgrounds whose families are not in a position to absorb sudden increases in educational expenses.
The decision to hold an indefinite dharna rather than a symbolic protest march reflects the seriousness with which the ABVP views the proposed revision. Fountain Plaza, as a prominent public space in Jammu, provides the protest with visibility and the potential to draw public attention and sympathy.
The proposed fee hike, which the university administration has not publicly detailed in full, has clearly struck a nerve among the student population. The ABVP’s demand for reconsideration will now depend on whether the university’s governing bodies are prepared to engage with the students’ concerns constructively or allow the standoff to intensify.
For university administrations across Jammu and Kashmir, where economic vulnerability among students is pronounced, the question of fee revision is always politically and socially charged. The Jammu University leadership will need to weigh the financial rationale for the proposed increase against its equity implications before the protest gains further momentum.
