Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari has conducted comprehensive review meetings covering National Highway projects spanning a combined 7,770 km across Telangana, Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh, underscoring the central government’s focus on accelerating highway infrastructure in both mainland states and strategic Union Territories.
The review meetings, held at the Ministry’s headquarters in New Delhi, covered 4,931 km of national highway projects in Telangana, 2,035 km in Jammu and Kashmir, and 804 km in the Union Territory of Ladakh. Minister of State for Road Transport and Highways Harsh Malhotra was also present during the review sessions.
For Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, the review assumes particular strategic and economic significance. Road connectivity in these regions is not merely a matter of public convenience but a critical component of national security, border logistics, and regional economic integration. National Highway projects in J&K and Ladakh include several corridor upgrades connecting remote districts, improving access to forward areas, and facilitating faster movement of both civilian and defence traffic in terrain that presents among the most formidable engineering challenges in the country.
During the meetings, Minister Gadkari assessed the status of ongoing projects, the adequacy of maintenance measures, and the broader quality assurance frameworks being applied across highway corridors. He emphasised the imperative of accelerating project timelines without compromising construction quality or accountability standards.
Gadkari also directed all implementing officials and executing agencies to strengthen project monitoring mechanisms and ensure that infrastructure deliverables meet specifications for long-term durability, rider comfort, and operational reliability. He called for the adoption of advanced construction technologies and globally benchmarked engineering practices across the reviewed corridors.
The Minister underscored that well-maintained, high-performance road infrastructure is a foundational enabler of regional connectivity, economic growth, tourism potential, and commuter convenience in all three regions under review.
