United States President Donald Trump on Wednesday expressed sharp displeasure with NATO member nations for their failure to back his military campaign against Iran, calling the alliance’s silence during the conflict a personal and strategic disappointment, even as he insisted that the United States had achieved a decisive military outcome entirely on its own.
Trump made his remarks during a White House meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, one of the most closely watched diplomatic encounters ahead of the alliance’s July 7-8 summit scheduled to be held in the Turkish capital of Ankara. The meeting comes at a moment of heightened tension within the alliance, with divisions over the Iran war adding to pre-existing disagreements over defence spending and burden-sharing.
Speaking directly to Rutte, Trump said he felt “let down” by NATO allies who chose not to provide active support for the US-led military campaign against Iran. He argued that the scale and speed of the American military operation, which he claimed dismantled Iran’s capabilities “in literally the first week”, demonstrated that Washington did not require allied assistance from a purely operational standpoint. However, he said, a gesture of solidarity from the 32-nation bloc would have been meaningful.
For his part, Rutte sought to ease the diplomatic friction, pointing out that European NATO member states had made a significant logistical contribution to the campaign by allowing thousands of American aircraft to operate from bases across Europe. He said 4,000 to 5,000 US planes had taken off from European bases during the conflict, arguing that this represented a substantial allied contribution that should not be overlooked.
The exchange highlights the persistent tension between Trump’s transactional view of alliances and European NATO members’ preference for collective decision-making and multilateral frameworks. The upcoming Ankara summit will be a critical test of how the alliance navigates these strains, with several member nations expected to push back on Trump’s demands for higher defence spending even as they seek to preserve the fundamental unity of the transatlantic security arrangement.
