Prime Minister Narendra Modi has put forward several key initiatives aimed at further strengthening cooperation among BRICS countries, India’s BRICS Sherpa Sudhakar Dalela said at a press briefing held by BRICS Sherpas on the sidelines of the 18th Summit in New Delhi.
Among the proposals outlined by Dalela was the BRICS Troika mechanism, an arrangement intended to ensure greater continuity and coordination in the bloc’s leadership transitions between the outgoing, current and incoming chairs of the grouping. Modi also proposed a roadmap for reforming global governance structures, a theme that has featured prominently in India’s engagement with multilateral institutions in recent years as emerging economies push for a greater voice in bodies that were largely shaped in the aftermath of the Second World War.
The Prime Minister’s proposals additionally included assistance measures for seafarers stranded in crisis situations, an issue that has drawn increasing international attention amid conflicts and geopolitical disruptions affecting global shipping routes, along with measures aimed at enhancing the negotiating capacity of the Global South, a grouping of developing nations that BRICS has increasingly positioned itself as a voice for on the world stage. Dalela’s briefing offered one of the clearest official summaries yet of the substantive agenda India has pushed during its chairship of the bloc this year, with the initiatives spanning institutional reform, economic cooperation and humanitarian concerns.
