Minister for Health, Medical Education and Social Welfare Sakeena Itoo on Friday laid the foundation stone for a Volleyball Academy at Nihama in the D.H. Pora constituency of Kulgam district, an initiative being established at an estimated cost of one crore rupees to expand sports infrastructure and training opportunities for local youth.
Speaking at the ceremony, Itoo said the government is making sustained efforts to provide better opportunities for young people in both sports and education, describing sports as playing an important role in the overall development of youth by helping channelise their energy toward positive and productive activities rather than idle distraction. She said strengthening sports infrastructure at the grassroots level would encourage more young people to take up sports and give them meaningful opportunities to develop their talent closer to home rather than having to travel to distant training centres.
The Minister said the Volleyball Academy would give local youth access to better training facilities and help nurture sporting talent within the area, adding that sports and playgrounds can provide young people with a healthy and constructive environment amid challenges such as unemployment, competitive pressures and broader social strains that many face today. The foundation stone-laying ceremony was attended by officials, public representatives, local residents and a large turnout of youth from the surrounding area, reflecting the community’s evident interest in the project.
