Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a bilateral meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in New Delhi on the sidelines of the 18th BRICS Summit, with the two leaders discussing key bilateral issues and reaffirming their commitment to finding a fair, practical and mutually acceptable resolution to the long-running border dispute between the two countries.

Both leaders stressed that differences between the two nations should not be allowed to escalate into disputes, reiterating the need to view the India-China relationship from a strategic and long-term perspective rather than through the lens of immediate friction points. During the meeting, Modi placed particular emphasis on the principles of mutual respect, mutual sensitivity and mutual interests, telling Xi that peace and stability in the border areas remain an essential foundation for the continued development of bilateral ties. He also underlined the importance of both sides adhering to existing agreements and understandings relating to the border, a point that has remained central to India’s approach to managing the relationship since tensions flared in recent years.

On the economic and trade front, the two leaders emphasised the need to address each other’s concerns, signalling continued engagement on commercial ties even as the broader strategic relationship remains carefully managed. Both sides also welcomed the progress made in bilateral relations since their previous meeting in August last year, suggesting a degree of continuity in the diplomatic track between New Delhi and Beijing even as the underlying border question remains unresolved.
