Experts drawn from oil marketing and automobile companies addressed the media in New Delhi on the rollout and adoption of E20 as an automotive fuel, highlighting its benefits while emphasising that the nationwide implementation followed years of rigorous research and staged state-level trials before its wider introduction.
Speaking during the interaction, former Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited Refineries Director R. Ramachandran said the E20 ethanol blending initiative had been introduced only after extensive research and detailed studies conducted by reputed organisations, alongside successful pilot implementation in several states, well ahead of the fuel’s nationwide rollout. He noted that this methodical, phased approach had allowed authorities to iron out technical and logistical challenges before scaling the programme across the country.
E20, which refers to petrol blended with 20 percent ethanol, has been positioned by the government as a key component of India’s broader push toward energy security and reduced dependence on imported crude oil. The initiative aligns with the country’s larger ethanol blending programme, which aims to cut carbon emissions from the transport sector while simultaneously supporting domestic sugarcane and grain-based ethanol producers.
Officials and industry experts at the interaction pointed to the extensive testing undertaken by automobile manufacturers to ensure compatibility of vehicle engines with the higher ethanol blend, a process that involved evaluating fuel efficiency, engine wear, and emission outputs across different vehicle categories. The staged rollout, first introduced in select states before expanding nationally, was designed to build confidence among both manufacturers and consumers regarding the fuel’s reliability and performance.
The discussion also touched upon the economic dimension of the ethanol blending programme, with experts noting that reduced reliance on imported fuel has tangible benefits for India’s foreign exchange outflows, while simultaneously creating a stable market for domestic agricultural produce used in ethanol production. Oil marketing companies have played a central role in coordinating the supply chain required to make E20 available at fuel stations across the country.
As India continues to expand its use of blended fuels, experts underlined that public awareness and consistent engine performance data will remain key to ensuring smooth adoption among vehicle owners, many of whom have raised questions in the past about mileage and engine compatibility with higher ethanol content fuels.
