Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to visit Indonesia in a bid to further strengthen the Special Strategic Partnership between the two nations, a visit that comes at a time when India continues to deepen its maritime and diplomatic engagement across Southeast Asia and the wider Indo-Pacific region.

Ahead of the Prime Minister’s visit, India’s Ambassador to Indonesia, Sandeep Chakravorty, spoke exclusively on key aspects of the bilateral relationship, offering insight into the depth and direction of the ties between the two countries. During the interaction, Chakravorty described India and Indonesia as important maritime partners, a characterisation that reflects the growing emphasis both nations have placed on naval cooperation, trade routes, and regional security coordination in recent years.

The Ambassador also highlighted Indonesia’s role as a key ASEAN partner for India, underscoring the significance of Jakarta as a central player within the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, a bloc that has become increasingly important to India’s foreign policy calculus as it seeks to balance economic and strategic interests across the region.

Chakravorty further underscored the strategic importance of the Strait of Malacca, one of the world’s busiest and most consequential shipping lanes, through which a significant share of global maritime trade, including energy shipments bound for India, passes each year. The Strait’s significance to regional security and commerce has made it a recurring focal point in discussions between India and Indonesia, both of which share an interest in ensuring the safety and openness of this critical waterway.

Beyond maritime cooperation, the Ambassador touched upon other issues pertaining to the broader bilateral relationship, though specific details on defence cooperation, trade agreements, or cultural exchange initiatives expected during the Prime Minister’s visit were not elaborated upon in the interaction.

The upcoming visit is expected to build upon the Special Strategic Partnership established between the two countries, with officials on both sides likely to explore avenues for deeper cooperation in trade, defence, and regional connectivity. As India continues to expand its footprint in Southeast Asia, the visit is being viewed as another step in New Delhi’s broader Act East policy, which has sought to strengthen ties with ASEAN nations over the past decade.
