The Jammu and Kashmir Government has approved a major augmentation of the Grid Station in Kathua, a move Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said would significantly strengthen the region’s power transmission infrastructure. The announcement was made by the Chief Minister on Friday through his official social media handle, underlining the administration’s continued focus on upgrading the Union Territory’s electricity network.
Under the approved plan, the capacity of the Kathua Grid Station will be enhanced from 3×50 MVA to 4×50 MVA, along with associated infrastructure works, at an estimated cost of ₹15.22 crore. The expansion is designed to add substantial additional transformation capacity to the station, which serves as a key node in the power distribution network for Kathua and the surrounding areas of the Jammu division.
Chief Minister Abdullah said the project is aimed at strengthening the power transmission network, improving grid reliability, and ensuring a better quality of electricity supply for consumers. He noted that the upgrade forms part of a broader push to modernise the Union Territory’s ageing power infrastructure, much of which has struggled to keep pace with rising demand, particularly during peak winter and summer months when consumption spikes place additional strain on existing grid stations.
Officials in the government said the infrastructure upgrade is expected to enhance both the efficiency and stability of the power distribution system, directly benefiting consumers across Kathua and adjoining areas. Grid stations of this scale typically serve as critical junctions that step down high voltage transmission power for distribution to towns and villages, meaning capacity upgrades of this nature often translate into fewer outages and more consistent voltage for end users.
The Kathua Grid Station project adds to a series of power sector investments the J&K administration has undertaken in recent months as part of efforts to reduce transmission losses and improve last mile delivery of electricity. With the Jammu region experiencing steady growth in both residential and industrial power demand, officials say such augmentation works will be essential to prevent bottlenecks in supply as the network expands to meet future needs across the district.
