Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Friday condemned a terrorist attack in south Kashmir’s Kulgam district that killed a labourer from Chhattisgarh and left another injured, directing security forces to intensify operations against those responsible.
Sinha said he spoke with Director General of Police Nalin Prabhat and other senior security officials immediately following the attack, and directed security forces to step up operations aimed at eliminating the terrorists involved in the strike. “I strongly condemn this cowardly act. I have directed our security forces to step up their operations and eliminate the terrorists,” Sinha said, in a statement that reflected the administration’s swift response to the incident.
The Lieutenant Governor said that Jammu and Kashmir Police, along with other security forces deployed in the area, had cordoned off the site of the attack and launched an operation to track down and bring the attackers to justice. The cordon and search operation is being carried out amid heightened security in the district, with additional forces reportedly moved into the area as part of the response to the attack.
Sinha said the injured labourer, also a resident of Chhattisgarh, had been shifted to a hospital for treatment following the attack, and he expressed condolences to the family of the deceased worker while wishing the injured man a speedy recovery. “The J&K administration and the entire nation stand with the families,” he said, seeking to convey the administration’s solidarity with the families of migrant labourers who have increasingly become targets of such attacks in parts of the Valley in recent years.
The attack on migrant labourers, who form a significant part of the workforce in various sectors across Jammu and Kashmir, particularly in construction and horticulture, has once again drawn attention to the security challenges facing non-local workers in the region. The administration’s swift response, including the Lieutenant Governor’s direct engagement with the DGP, signals the priority being accorded to both the security operation against the attackers and reassurance for the migrant worker community that continues to travel to Kashmir for employment despite periodic incidents of violence.
