Reports from Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK) indicate that at least 40 to 75 people have been killed during recent protests following alleged use of live ammunition and excessive force by Pakistani security forces to disperse demonstrators.
The unrest has reportedly intensified across several parts of the region, with areas including Rawalakot and Mirpur witnessing deadly confrontations between protesters and security personnel. Reports also suggest restrictions on movement, curfew-like measures, and disruptions to internet and telecommunications services amid escalating tensions.
The Jammu Kashmir Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC) has alleged that security forces used disproportionate force against peaceful protesters and has urged the United Nations, international human rights organisations, and democratic governments to intervene. The group claimed that live ammunition was used during the demonstrations, resulting in civilian casualties.
The United Nations Human Rights Office has expressed serious concern over the reported restrictions on fundamental freedoms in PoJK. Jeremy Laurence, spokesperson for the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, said that the criminalisation of civil society organisations and strict limitations on public gatherings raise concerns regarding violations of the rights to freedom of expression, peaceful assembly, and association.
The developments have drawn renewed attention to the situation of civil liberties and public freedoms in the region, with calls growing for an impartial review of the reported incidents and accountability for any alleged violations.
