Srinagar Police have claimed a swift breakthrough in a blind murder case, arresting a mother and son within six hours of recovering an unidentified body from a city canal. The arrests mark a rare instance of rapid resolution in a case that initially offered investigators no leads beyond the recovered remains.
The body, wrapped in gunny bags, was pulled out of the Babademb Canal beneath Baba Dawood Khakhi Bridge in the Khanyar area. Following the discovery, Police Station Khanyar registered a case under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and launched a formal investigation. Given the gravity of the case, senior officers constituted a Special Investigation Team to pursue the inquiry with urgency.
Working through the available leads, the investigating team identified the accused as Haleema Bano and her son Moomin Ahmad, originally from Machil in Kupwara district but residing as tenants in the Mughal Mohalla area of Rainawari. Investigators found that the pair had fled Srinagar in an apparent attempt to evade arrest after the killing. Acting on multiple leads, the team tracked them down to the Lolab area of Kupwara and took them into custody within hours of the body’s recovery, a pace that reflects the coordinated response mounted by the SIT.
The deceased was identified as Nazir Ahmad Bhat, son of Ghulam Mohammad Bhat, a resident of Kalantpora in the Hawal area. Preliminary investigation suggested the victim was killed inside the rented accommodation occupied by the accused following a dispute over money. Investigators believe the accused then wrapped the body in gunny bags and disposed of it in the canal in a calculated attempt to conceal the crime and destroy evidence linking them to the killing.
Police said several articles connected to the alleged offence have already been recovered during the course of the investigation, providing further material support to the case being built against the accused. Officers noted that the probe remains active, with efforts underway to establish whether any other individuals played a role in the crime and to complete the necessary legal formalities before the matter proceeds to trial.
The case has drawn attention both for the disturbing nature of the crime and for the speed with which Srinagar Police managed to identify, trace and apprehend the accused, a response that officials say reflects the effectiveness of the dedicated SIT model deployed for serious and time sensitive cases.
