A man who had been fighting for his life for nearly three weeks after suffering critical injuries in an alleged assault over a financial dispute succumbed on Saturday at a hospital in Srinagar, bringing a tragic end to a case that had already drawn criticism over the pace of the initial police response.
The deceased has been identified as Maqsood Ahmad Ganie, son of Wali Mohammad Ganie, a resident of Gashgund Pungzwa in Kupwara district. He had sustained severe injuries roughly twenty days earlier in an alleged scuffle linked to a financial disagreement in his native village, and had been under treatment since the incident.
According to family members, the altercation stemmed directly from an unresolved money dispute between Maqsood and the accused. Relatives alleged that despite the severity of the assault, the accused was not taken into custody immediately after the incident, and that action was initiated only after Maqsood’s condition deteriorated and he ultimately died from his injuries. The delay in arrest has become a point of contention for the grieving family, who maintain that swifter intervention could have altered the course of events.
Police have since arrested the accused and registered a case under the relevant provisions of law, with officials confirming that further investigation into the circumstances of the assault is currently underway. Authorities have not yet detailed the exact sequence of events that led to the confrontation, though the financial motive cited by the family points to a dispute that escalated well beyond its original scope.
The bereaved family has appealed for strict legal action against the accused, calling for exemplary punishment to serve as a deterrent against similar incidents in the future. They have also urged authorities to ensure a fair, transparent and expeditious investigation so that all those responsible for Maqsood’s death are held accountable under the law.
Maqsood Ahmad Ganie is survived by two young children, a loss that has deepened the sense of grief within his family and community. Cases involving prolonged hospitalisation following assault related injuries often draw renewed scrutiny of how promptly law enforcement responds to reports of violence, and this incident is likely to add to that ongoing conversation in rural pockets of Kupwara district where access to swift policing remains a persistent concern.
