Senior citizens and members of the Auqaf Committee in Kilam area of south Kashmir’s Kulgam district held a candlelight march on Monday evening, condemning the killing of two non-local labourers in a recent terrorist attack in the area. The march reflected the deep sense of grief and outrage felt by the local community over the loss of innocent lives.
The march was organized to pay tribute to the victims, express solidarity with their bereaved families and send a united message against terrorism and violence. Participants carried candles through the streets of Kilam, observed a moment of silence and prayed for eternal peace for the deceased and strength for the families left behind to cope with their sudden loss.
Speakers at the gathering described the attack as a cowardly and inhuman act that has no place in society. They said the people of Kashmir have always stood for peace, harmony and brotherhood, and stressed that such acts of violence are deliberately aimed at disturbing communal unity and normalcy in the region, particularly at a time when Kashmir has been witnessing a steady return of tourism, trade and everyday economic activity.
The killing of non-local labourers has repeatedly triggered strong condemnation from residents across Kashmir, who have consistently emphasized that migrant workers contribute significantly to the region’s economy and are welcomed as guests rather than targets. Community leaders in Kilam reiterated this sentiment during Monday’s march, describing the attack as an assault not just on the victims but on the broader social fabric of Kashmir.
Participants urged the authorities to ensure that those responsible for the attack are swiftly identified and brought to justice, reflecting a widespread demand across the Valley for accountability whenever such incidents occur. They also reaffirmed their commitment to promoting peace, communal harmony and coexistence, expressed heartfelt sympathy with the victims’ families and said that the people of Kulgam stand united against terrorism in all its forms.
The candlelight march in Kilam adds to a growing pattern of civil society response across south Kashmir, where local communities have increasingly organized public demonstrations of solidarity following attacks on civilians and non-local workers, signalling a collective rejection of violence at the grassroots level.
