Seventeen suspected Bangladeshi nationals, including women and children, were detained by police in Ramban district on Monday while travelling towards Kashmir, after they allegedly failed to produce valid travel and identity documents during a routine security check, officials said. The detention has raised fresh concerns over illegal cross border movement amid heightened security arrangements for the ongoing Amarnath Yatra.
The group was intercepted near Banihal during checking carried out specifically in connection with yatra related security measures, which typically see intensified vigilance along the Jammu-Srinagar highway and its feeder routes. According to police sources, the individuals were travelling in two vehicles when they came under scrutiny from personnel manning the checkpoint.
Police personnel reportedly grew suspicious after they were unable to communicate with the occupants due to a language barrier, a detail that quickly escalated the routine check into a full verification exercise. During preliminary questioning, the group failed to satisfactorily establish their identity, prompting their detention for further verification by investigating agencies.
Initial investigation suggests that the detained persons had allegedly entered India illegally through the Assam border before travelling onward towards Kashmir, though officials cautioned that these claims are still being verified as part of the broader investigation. The route, if confirmed, would point to a longer and more organized pattern of movement rather than an isolated crossing.
Following the detention, police registered an FIR at Police Station Banihal under Sections 3 and 21 of the Immigration and Foreigners Act, 2025, formally initiating legal proceedings against the group. The presence of women and small children among the detained individuals has added a humanitarian dimension to the case even as security agencies pursue their investigation.
Officials said further investigation is in progress to ascertain the identity of the detained persons, their exact route of entry into the country and whether any organized network facilitated their travel towards Kashmir. The purpose of their journey and other related aspects continue to be probed. Security agencies in Jammu and Kashmir have in recent years stepped up scrutiny of unidentified travellers along key highways, particularly during high footfall periods such as the Amarnath Yatra, when the movement of pilgrims, tourists and labourers surges sharply across the region.
