New Delhi, Aug 4: In a major crackdown on fugitive offenders, the Government of India has brought back 274 fugitive criminals from 36 countries between 2019 and 2026 under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the guidance of Union Home Minister Amit Shah. The government said the extradition of fugitives has been elevated to a “national priority”, backed by stronger diplomacy, intelligence coordination and technology-driven investigations.
The Centre said the campaign has targeted terrorists, gangsters, economic offenders, narcotics traffickers and other criminals wanted in serious cases, including murder, rape and POCSO offences. Authorities also attached assets worth ₹17,874 crore under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) during the period.
The government highlighted major reforms, including the Fugitive Economic Offenders Act, new criminal laws enabling trial in absentia, the launch of BHARATPOL, and enhanced coordination with Interpol. Officials said these measures have significantly accelerated extradition proceedings, with 182 Red Corner Notices issued in 2026 alone, reflecting India’s intensified global pursuit of absconding criminals.
