Shopian Police have registered two separate criminal cases in connection with the alleged bursting of firecrackers during marriage ceremonies, in violation of prohibitory orders issued by the District Magistrate.
Officials said the two FIRs, numbered 148/2026 and 151/2026, were registered at Police Station Shopian after fireworks were reportedly set off during wedding celebrations despite the restrictions imposed by the district administration. Both cases are currently under investigation, with police examining the circumstances surrounding the violations and identifying those responsible for organising the events where the prohibitory orders were flouted.
The district administration had earlier prohibited the use of firecrackers across Shopian through an order issued by the District Magistrate, citing concerns over public safety and law and order. Police confirmed that the restrictions continue to remain in force across the district, and that strict compliance is expected from residents organising social and public functions, including weddings.
Firecracker bursting at social gatherings has periodically drawn attention from authorities in parts of Kashmir, with district administrations issuing periodic prohibitory orders citing safety hazards, noise pollution concerns and, in sensitive periods, apprehensions over public order. Officials say such restrictions are typically enforced more strictly during specific periods when heightened vigilance is required.
Police have cautioned that legal action will be taken against anyone found violating the prohibitory orders in the district and have appealed to the public to cooperate with the restrictions while organising social and public functions such as weddings, religious gatherings and other celebrations. Authorities reiterated that continued vigilance would be maintained to ensure compliance, and that violations, once reported or detected, would be met with prompt registration of cases.
The Shopian district administration and police have urged residents to report any instances of firecracker use in violation of the prohibitory orders, stating that community cooperation remains essential to the effective enforcement of such restrictions. Investigations into the two registered cases are ongoing, with police expected to identify and question those involved in organising the ceremonies where the violations occurred.
