Srinagar Police have summoned People’s Democratic Party leader Iltija Mufti to join an investigation after registering a case in connection with an alleged assault on a police officer during a protest led by PDP president Mehbooba Mufti in Srinagar earlier this week.
According to police, the incident occurred during a demonstration at S.K. Park on August 4, when PDP workers attempted to march towards Lal Chowk after authorities had denied permission for the protest. Police alleged that a section of the demonstrators tried to breach barricades and block Residency Road, leading to a scuffle between protesters and security personnel deployed at the site.
During the altercation, police have alleged that Iltija Mufti assaulted a police officer on duty and bit his forearm, causing injuries. The officer was subsequently shifted to hospital, where he received medical treatment, including wound management and preventive care administered in accordance with standard clinical protocols.
Following the incident, Police Station Kothibagh registered FIR No. 63/2026 and launched a formal investigation into the allegations. Police said Iltija Mufti has been directed to appear before the investigating officer on Thursday to join the probe and record her statement in connection with the case.
There has been no immediate response from Iltija Mufti or the People’s Democratic Party to the allegations made by police. The claims have not been independently verified, and the investigation into the incident remains ongoing, with police expected to examine visual evidence and witness accounts from the day of the protest.
The case stems from the August 4 demonstration organised by the PDP against the constitutional changes introduced in Jammu and Kashmir on August 5, 2019. Several political parties across the Valley had planned similar demonstrations to mark the anniversary, many of which were either restricted or prevented outright by the authorities citing law and order concerns. The developments come amid heightened political activity in the run-up to the anniversary, with security agencies maintaining a close watch on planned gatherings across Srinagar and other parts of the Valley.
