The Department of Information and Public Relations has launched the IFFJK Emerging Filmmakers Competition 2026, a new initiative aimed at nurturing young cinematic talent from Jammu and Kashmir as part of the run-up to the maiden International Film Festival of Jammu and Kashmir. Registrations for the competition opened on Wednesday, August 6, offering aspiring filmmakers across the Union Territory a formal platform to showcase their creative and technical abilities.
The competition is open exclusively to filmmakers and storytellers native to Jammu and Kashmir, reflecting the Department’s broader effort to identify and promote homegrown talent in the region’s growing film ecosystem. Entrants are required to submit original short films of a maximum duration of five minutes, with the submission window closing on August 26, 2026, giving participants roughly three weeks to conceive, shoot and finalise their entries.
Eligibility criteria specify that applicants must be between 18 and 39 years of age as on September 1, 2026, and must hold a valid Jammu and Kashmir domicile certificate, ensuring the competition remains firmly rooted in supporting local creative voices rather than external participants.
The competition has been organised around the theme “Rang-e-Cinema: Frames of a New Jammu and Kashmir”, a framing intended to capture the region’s evolving cultural, social and creative narratives while pushing young filmmakers to explore contemporary stories that reflect the changing face of the Union Territory. Officials said the theme is designed to encourage participants to move beyond conventional narratives and experiment with fresh perspectives on identity, change and everyday life in Jammu and Kashmir.
Interested filmmakers and cinematographers have been advised to register through the official IFFJK website, where detailed guidelines, eligibility criteria and the complete registration process have been made available for the convenience of applicants. The Department has urged aspiring filmmakers from across the Union Territory to make use of the opportunity, describing it as a significant step toward strengthening Jammu and Kashmir’s film culture through original and impactful storytelling.
The competition is expected to feed into the broader programming of the first International Film Festival of Jammu and Kashmir, positioning the event as both a showcase for established cinema and a launchpad for a new generation of regional filmmakers looking to make their mark on a wider stage.
