Jammu, August 11: Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Udhampur-Reasi Range Shiv Kumar Sharma, IPS, chaired a meeting with senior officers of Udhampur and Reasi districts to review security preparedness for the smooth and peaceful conduct of Independence Day 2026 celebrations.
The meeting focused on the overall security situation in the two districts and the measures required to ensure foolproof arrangements ahead of the national celebrations. The DIG directed all stakeholders to maintain close coordination and work in synergy to address potential security challenges and ensure a secure environment for the public.
During the meeting, Sharma reviewed security arrangements at vital installations, religious places, sensitive locations and important public areas. Officers were directed to strengthen security measures at vulnerable points and intensify checking and surveillance across both districts.
The DIG also called for strengthening nakas and increasing vigilance at strategic and sensitive locations. He emphasised the need for enhanced monitoring and effective deployment of security personnel to prevent any untoward incident during the Independence Day celebrations.
Special attention was given to venues where national-level programmes are scheduled to be held. The DIG directed officers to ensure adequate security deployment, effective access control and proper traffic management around such venues.
He further stressed the importance of maintaining close coordination among various security and intelligence agencies. Police, Army, Central Armed Police Forces, CID, Intelligence Bureau and other concerned agencies were asked to maintain effective communication and share relevant inputs promptly to ensure a coordinated security response.
Sharma underlined the importance of round-the-clock vigilance during the period leading up to Independence Day and called upon officers to remain prepared to respond swiftly to any emerging security concern.
The meeting was attended by SSP Udhampur, SSP Reasi and representatives of the Army, including officers of the rank of Colonel. Commanding Officers of CRPF Battalions 06, 126, 137 and 187 deployed in Udhampur and Reasi also participated in the meeting.
The BSF Commanding Officer, Additional SPs of Udhampur, Katra and Reasi, along with supervisory officers from the Police, CID, IB and other allied security agencies, were also present.
The DIG directed all officers to ensure that security arrangements are finalised and implemented well in advance of the celebrations. He called for sustained vigilance, effective inter-agency coordination and regular assessment of security measures to ensure that Independence Day programmes are conducted in a peaceful and dignified manner.
The meeting comes as security agencies step up preparations across Jammu and Kashmir ahead of Independence Day, with authorities focusing on strengthening surveillance, securing important installations and ensuring smooth movement of people during public celebrations.
Sharma reiterated that coordinated efforts by all concerned agencies would be essential to maintaining a secure atmosphere and ensuring that people are able to participate in Independence Day celebrations without disruption.
