New Delhi, August 11: India and the United States have advanced cooperation in civil and commercial space activities, with the two countries discussing new opportunities in human spaceflight, space science and Earth observation during the ninth India-US Civil Space Joint Working Group meeting.
The meeting was held on August 5 and 6 at the headquarters of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) in Bengaluru, bringing together officials and representatives from both countries to review ongoing cooperation and identify new areas of collaboration.
Discussions focused on strengthening bilateral cooperation across several areas of space activity, including human spaceflight, space science and Earth observation. The two sides also explored opportunities for deeper collaboration under the TRUST Initiative.
The latest engagement reflects the growing strategic importance of India-US cooperation in the civil and commercial space sectors, with both countries seeking to expand partnerships in space exploration, scientific research and technological innovation.
The discussions also come as India continues to expand its capabilities in human spaceflight, satellite technology and planetary exploration, while the United States pursues ambitious programmes aimed at returning humans to the Moon and establishing a sustained presence there.
In a significant development, the US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has invited ISRO to participate in its Moon Base programme, potentially opening another avenue for cooperation in deep-space exploration.
The invitation is being seen as a further step in strengthening the long-term space partnership between the two countries and could create opportunities for Indian scientists and space experts to contribute to future lunar exploration initiatives.
The growing cooperation also reflects the wider evolution of India-US relations in advanced technology and strategic sectors. Space has emerged as an important area for collaboration, covering scientific research, commercial opportunities, Earth observation, human spaceflight and exploration beyond low-Earth orbit.
The ninth Joint Working Group meeting provided an institutional platform for both sides to review progress and discuss the future direction of their civil space partnership.
