Srinagar, August 11: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has taken swift action against its Pulwama district president Er. Syed Showkat Gayoor Andrabi, suspending him from all organisational posts after Jammu and Kashmir Police registered an FIR against him over an alleged extortion demand and criminal intimidation.

According to officials, the FIR was registered on Monday night at Newa Police Post in Pulwama on a complaint filed by contractor Mohammad Yaseen Ganie. The complainant has alleged that Gayoor demanded money from him in connection with work being carried out for the Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee, Barthana, and allegedly threatened him with action under the Public Safety Act (PSA) if the demand was not met. The complaint reportedly contains allegations of extortion, criminal intimidation, wrongful restraint, obstruction, harassment and illegal demands.

In a significant political development, BJP J&K has initiated disciplinary proceedings against Gayoor following the FIR. A suspension order issued by the party states that he has been removed with immediate effect from all organisational posts and responsibilities, including his position as BJP Pulwama district president. The action was taken on the recommendation of BJP J&K Disciplinary Committee Chairman Advocate Sunil Sethi, in consultation with BJP J&K president Sat Sharma and General Secretary Mohammad Anwar Khan.

The party said the suspension would remain in force pending finalisation of the disciplinary proceedings, while reiterating its commitment to maintaining high standards of discipline, integrity and morality in public life.

SECOND MAJOR ACTION IN KASHMIR IN DAYS The development comes just days after the BJP suspended nine party workers on August 7 following a major controversy over allegedly derogatory slogans concerning Kashmiri women during an August 5 rally in south Kashmir’s Anantnag.

The latest action against its Pulwama district president marks another strong disciplinary move by the BJP in Jammu and Kashmir within days.

The allegations against Gayoor are yet to be established in court, and the FIR remains subject to investigation.
