In a dramatic political development, prominent Baloch activists led by Mir Yar Baloch have proclaimed the independence of Balochistan from Pakistan, declaring the formation of the “Republic of Balochistan” and designating August 11 as its Independence Day.

The declaration invokes historical claims dating back to 1947 and calls on the United Nations to recognise Balochistan as an independent state. The leaders have also highlighted the region’s vast mineral resources and claimed to command an army of around 500,000 personnel, while sharply criticising Pakistan’s military establishment.

Supporters of the declaration reportedly staged rallies in several parts of the world, raised slogans, sang an anthem and celebrated what they described as Balochistan’s independence. Claims of support from Indian social media users and some officials have also emerged.

However, the declaration has not been recognised by any country, and Pakistan continues to exercise control over Balochistan. The announcement therefore represents a political claim rather than an internationally recognised change in the region’s status.

The development is likely to intensify the long-running debate over Balochistan’s political future, sovereignty and demands for self-determination.
