SRINAGAR: More than 36 years after Kashmiri Pandit writer and poet Sarwanand Koul Premi and his son were abducted and killed by terrorists in Anantnag, the State Investigation Agency (SIA) of Jammu & Kashmir Police has intensified its investigation, conducting raids at several locations.
The case, initially registered by Anantnag Police, was recently transferred to the SIA for a fresh investigation into the decades-old terror crime.
Premi, a noted writer and advocate of communal harmony, was abducted along with his son Virender on the intervening night of April 29-30, 1990. Their bodies were recovered on May 1 from a forested area nearly 20 kilometres from their home.
Police sources said the SIA has uncovered several previously undisclosed details that could help identify the perpetrators. Investigators are also examining historical records and archives to reconstruct the circumstances surrounding the abduction and killings.
Premi was known for his literary contribution, including his Kashmiri translation of the Bhagavad Gita, and was remembered for promoting peace, coexistence and communal harmony in Kashmir. The J&K administration honoured him with a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2022.
The latest development comes months after the SIA filed a chargesheet in the 1990 killing of Kashmiri Pandit nurse Sarla Bhat, naming jailed separatist leader Yasin Malik as the prime accused.
