Prince Harry and Meghan are set to return to the United Kingdom, in a development that could mark a new chapter in their long-running estrangement from the British royal family. The couple stepped back from senior royal duties in 2020 and relocated to the United States, but a series of recent meetings with King Charles and other signs of a thaw have fuelled hopes of reconciliation.

Harry and Meghan first met in July 2016 and married at Windsor Castle in May 2018. In January 2020, they announced their decision to step back as working members of the royal family, a move that stunned the British establishment and eventually took them to California, where they spoke openly about tensions with the royal household and sustained scrutiny from the British press.

The rift widened in the years that followed, as Harry pursued a series of legal battles beginning in 2019 over media intrusion and the withdrawal of his official security arrangements. His 2023 memoir, Spare, laid out his grievances with the royal family in considerable detail and drew significant public attention, even as Harry maintained that he wanted reconciliation despite ongoing disputes, particularly over his security status while in Britain.

Signs of a thaw began to emerge after King Charles was diagnosed with cancer in February 2024. Harry made a brief visit to see his father that same month, and further meetings between the two took place in September 2025 and July 2026, each seen as a small but significant marker of renewed contact between father and son.

A more substantial breakthrough came on July 10, 2026, when King Charles met Harry, Meghan and their two children at Highgrove House, the first time the King and Queen Camilla had met the couple’s children in years. The encounter was widely viewed as a meaningful step toward repairing the broader family relationship.

Plans for Harry and Meghan’s return to Britain emerged on August 19, 2026, though the couple will not resume their roles as working members of the royal family. The arrangement is expected to allow for greater family contact going forward while preserving the couple’s status outside official royal duties, a middle path that observers say reflects how much groundwork has quietly been laid since the King’s diagnosis first prompted a rethink on both sides.
