India has dispatched 10 tonnes of Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief material and essential medicines to support Nepal’s response to the devastating floods that have ravaged the country’s northern Rasuwa district, as the death toll from the disaster continued to climb on Wednesday.
External Affairs Minister Dr S. Jaishankar shared details of the dispatch on social media, noting that India stands with Nepal and its people through the crisis and that its thoughts remain with the bereaved families and all those affected by the disaster.
The floods struck the Nepal-Tibet border area on Wednesday, triggering a massive deluge that swept through Rasuwa district and left a trail of destruction. The death toll from the flash floods has risen to 95, with many tourists reported out of contact as authorities continue search and rescue operations in the affected areas.
Visuals from the disaster zone showed dozens of people being swept away near the border, with authorities fearing the toll could climb further as the scale of destruction becomes clearer. Homes, roads and bridges have been washed away across the worst-hit areas, while rescue helicopters have been unable to land in several parts of Rasuwa district due to the severity of the terrain and ongoing conditions, hampering relief efforts on the ground.
India’s swift dispatch of relief material reflects its longstanding role as a first responder to humanitarian crises in the neighbourhood, with the aid expected to bolster Nepal’s emergency medical and disaster response capacity as rescue operations continue in the still-unfolding disaster.
