Union Electronics and Information Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Wednesday highlighted India’s rapidly expanding semiconductor ecosystem, describing chips as a foundational industry whose output powers virtually every other sector of the economy, from mobile phones and cars to drones, aeroplanes and MRI machines.
Sharing details of India’s semiconductor journey, Vaishnaw noted that the global electronics industry, which depends heavily on semiconductor supply chains, is now estimated at $4.3 trillion and continues to expand rapidly. He said India’s own trajectory in the sector began to change decisively after Prime Minister Narendra Modi took office and launched the Make in India initiative, which was followed by a series of reforms spanning foreign direct investment norms, taxation and customs duty structures aimed at attracting manufacturing investment.
The government subsequently rolled out multiple schemes to support electronics manufacturing, with specific incentives designed to boost domestic production of mobile phones and other electronic devices while encouraging global electronics and mobile companies to set up operations in India. Vaishnaw said that today, nearly all major electronics companies maintain a presence in the country, with India’s electronics manufacturing footprint now exceeding 300 units nationwide.
According to figures shared by the Minister, India’s electronics manufacturing output has crossed $130 billion, while electronics exports have surpassed $48 billion, with mobile phones now ranking as the country’s largest exported item. The sector’s expansion has also translated into significant employment generation, with electronics manufacturing currently supporting an estimated 2.5 million jobs across the country.
Vaishnaw’s remarks come amid continued government focus on positioning India as a key node in the global semiconductor and electronics supply chain, building on the momentum of recent semiconductor plant inaugurations and investment announcements across the country.
