Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Kashmir celebrated National Sports Day at its Shalimar Campus on Saturday with a series of sporting activities centred around the theme “Ek Ghanta Maidan Mein,” encouraging students to devote at least one hour every day to physical activity and sports. The programme was organised at the Sports Ground of the Shalimar Campus to commemorate the birth anniversary of Major Dhyan Chand, the legendary Indian hockey player regarded as one of the country’s greatest sporting icons.

The programme was inaugurated by Dean Students Welfare Prof. S. A. Gangoo, who interacted with participating students and encouraged them to make sports and physical activity an integral part of their daily routine. Addressing the gathering, Prof. Gangoo highlighted Major Dhyan Chand’s remarkable contribution to Indian hockey and his enduring sporting legacy, stressing that regular participation in sports is vital for physical fitness, a healthy lifestyle and mental wellbeing. He urged students to spend at least one hour every day on the sports ground, framing consistent physical activity as essential to a balanced student life alongside academic responsibilities.

The celebration featured a volleyball match and a tug of war competition between student teams representing the Faculty of Horticulture and the Faculty of Agricultural Engineering. The Faculty of Horticulture team emerged victorious in the volleyball match, while the Agricultural Engineering team won the tug of war competition, with both contests drawing enthusiastic participation and support from students across the campus.

The winning teams and participants were felicitated with medals in recognition of their sporting performance and spirit, adding a competitive edge to the day’s celebrations. Dr. Mudasir Ali and Dr. Owais, along with many students and spectators, witnessed the matches and cheered on the participating teams throughout the event, contributing to a lively atmosphere on the sports ground.

The programme was organised by Students Welfare Officer Dr. Seemi Lohani, who said such activities provide students an opportunity to engage beyond the classroom while promoting teamwork, discipline, fitness and sportsmanship. She added that the celebration contributes toward creating a vibrant, healthy and dynamic campus environment, and encourages students to adopt an active and balanced lifestyle that extends beyond their academic pursuits at the university.
