A wave of jubilation has swept across Budgam district, particularly among the youth and local tourism stakeholders, following the launch of infrastructure development works at Haijan Brenwar, a picturesque and largely undiscovered destination tucked away in the Chadoora area of the district.
The infrastructure work, estimated at ₹68 lakh, has been officially tendered, a development that residents and tourism operators say marks a turning point for a meadow that has long remained on the periphery of Kashmir’s tourist circuit despite its natural charm. People cutting across socio political affiliations have expressed gratitude to Speaker of the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly and MLA Chrar-i-Sharief, Abdul Rahim Rather, for taking the initiative to develop the site.
Tourism stakeholders said the issuance of the tender once again demonstrates Rather’s commitment to public welfare and to the promotion of tourism in the region, expressing hope that basic infrastructure development would open new avenues of employment for local youth while placing Haijan Brenwar prominently on the tourism map of Jammu and Kashmir.
Speaking on the development, the Speaker said his broader mission was to transform the entire Chrar-i-Sharief constituency into a model constituency of Jammu and Kashmir, with particular emphasis on tourism promotion, infrastructure development and the creation of sustainable livelihood opportunities for the local population. He added that Haijan’s natural beauty and tranquil surroundings offered immense potential as a tourist destination, while stressing the need to preserve its pristine character and ecological balance even as development proceeds.
Located near Brenwar village, approximately 36 kilometres from Srinagar, Haijan is surrounded by lush green meadows, expansive open fields and tall pine and coniferous trees, with a clear stream running through the valley. During summer months, local shepherds camp in traditional wooden huts while grazing livestock in the meadow, offering visitors a rare glimpse into the region’s pastoral lifestyle. The meadow’s natural cricket ground has also made it a draw for young people and outdoor enthusiasts in recent years.
With its untouched landscapes and refreshing mountain air, Haijan is increasingly being described as a hidden jewel of Central Kashmir, offering an ideal setting for hikers, photographers and those seeking a peaceful retreat away from the valley’s more crowded tourist hubs. Local residents and stakeholders expect the planned infrastructure to give a meaningful boost to employment and the wider socio economic development of the Chadoora and Budgam belt.
