Altaf Hussain, a 28-year-old PhD scholar in Computer Science at the University of Kashmir, died in a road accident at Khanyar, Srinagar, on Thursday, leaving his family, teachers and the wider academic community in deep shock.
A resident of Sangerwani, Pulwama, Hussain was pursuing doctoral research at a formative stage of his academic career. He was the nephew of Ghulam Rabbani, Imam of Mir Masjid, Khanyar, who also serves as a Theology Teacher at Millennium International School in the area, a connection that brought the loss close to both the religious and educational circles of the locality.
News of his death spread quickly through Srinagar and Pulwama, drawing an outpouring of grief from students, faculty members and residents who described him as a promising young scholar whose academic journey had been cut tragically short.
Private Schools Association State President Bilal Ahmad Bhat expressed profound sorrow over the loss, describing it as deeply heartbreaking and an irreparable loss to the scholar’s family, school community and society at large. He prayed that the departed soul be granted the highest place in Jannat-ul-Firdous and that the bereaved family be given strength and patience to bear the loss.
The management of Millennium International School also conveyed deep grief, calling Hussain a bright and promising young man whose untimely passing had left a profound void. The school extended its thoughts and prayers to the bereaved family during what it described as an extremely difficult time, adding that the loss of a scholar at such a promising stage of life was particularly painful for the entire institution.
Both the Private Schools Association and Millennium International School expressed solidarity with the family and offered prayers for the departed soul, seeking forgiveness for his shortcomings and elevation of his rank in the hereafter.
Road accidents remain a persistent concern in Srinagar’s congested urban stretches, including areas like Khanyar, where mixed traffic, narrow lanes and high vehicular density continue to pose risks to commuters. Hussain’s death adds to a pattern of tragic losses among the city’s young population that have periodically renewed calls for stricter traffic management and road safety measures in the old city and adjoining localities.
The Private Schools Association and Millennium International School conveyed their deepest condolences to the bereaved family, praying that Almighty Allah grant the departed soul Maghfirat and the family Sabr-e-Jameel during this difficult hour.
