Director General Youth Services and Sports J&K, Anuradha Gupta, on Friday kick started the Inter-District UT Level Boxing Competitions at the Indoor Sports Complex, Wazir Bagh, Srinagar, launching a three day sporting event aimed at spotlighting young boxing talent from across the Union Territory.
Gupta was accompanied by Deputy Director Planning YSS, Megha Baogia, as the competition got underway with participants drawn from all corners of Jammu and Kashmir. In all, 14 districts of the Union Territory are represented at the event, with 279 boys across all age groups taking part alongside 52 technical officials overseeing the proceedings. The first phase of the boys’ competitions for all age groups began on the opening day and is scheduled to conclude on 13th September 2026.
Before the competition commenced, the Director General administered a pledge reaffirming the commitment to drug de-addiction among youth and young athletes, a gesture that reflected the department’s continued emphasis on promoting healthy lifestyles, discipline and sportsmanship among the young participants gathered for the event. The competition is being hosted by the District Youth Services and Sports Office, Srinagar, under the Nasha Mukt J&K Abhiyan, the anti-drug campaign that has increasingly featured in the department’s sporting and youth outreach programmes. The DYSSO Srinagar has arranged the necessary facilities for participating athletes, technical officials and escort teachers to ensure the smooth conduct of the event through its duration.
The inaugural bout of the competition was contested between Ramban and Rajouri, marking the formal start of the UT-level sporting contest and setting the tone for the matches to follow over the coming days. With athletes from 14 districts taking part, the competition is expected to offer a genuinely competitive platform for young boxers to demonstrate their skills, determination and sporting talent on a stage larger than their home districts typically provide.
Organisers say the UT-level competition is also intended to give young athletes valuable exposure to higher-level competition while strengthening the broader sporting culture across Jammu and Kashmir. By bringing together players, technical officials and escort teachers from different districts on a common platform, the event is designed to give promising boxers from smaller districts the same opportunity to showcase their abilities as their counterparts from larger sporting hubs.
