The Indira Gandhi National Open University has announced the launch of a new One-Year MA in Development Studies programme, styled MADVSOY, for the July 2026 academic session, a move aimed at strengthening specialised higher education in the development sector at a time when demand for trained development professionals continues to grow.
The programme has been designed to equip students with advanced knowledge, practical skills and field exposure geared toward driving meaningful policy and social change, and is being offered through IGNOU’s School of Extension and Development Studies in New Delhi. It has been crafted specifically for technical and multidisciplinary graduates looking to build careers in the development sector, with the official notification restricting admissions to FYUP graduates, professional agriculture or allied graduates, and engineering graduates holding a four-year B.Tech or B.E. degree in any branch.
The university’s rationale for the programme rests on the observation that traditional development frameworks are evolving rapidly worldwide, creating a pressing need for experts capable of formulating, implementing, monitoring and evaluating large-scale development programmes. As nations undergo rapid socio-economic transformation while grappling with the climate crisis and pushing for sustainable development, the demand within India for highly skilled development professionals has risen correspondingly, a gap the new programme is intended to help address.
Staying in line with IGNOU’s broader mission of democratic and accessible higher learning, the university has set the total programme fee at a competitive Rs 8,000, keeping the qualification within reach of a wide pool of eligible graduates.
