Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired a Semiconductor Roundtable with leading global chip industry CEOs at Seva Teerth in New Delhi on Wednesday, urging deeper industry participation as India moves into what officials described as the next phase of its semiconductor growth story.

During the meeting, the Prime Minister emphasised the need for close collaboration between the government and the semiconductor industry in shaping India’s technology future, highlighting the country’s strong foundation in talent, technology adoption and infrastructure. He called for greater industry engagement in skilling, innovation and emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence and Quantum Computing, framing these as central to India’s long term competitiveness in the global technology landscape.

Referring to the government’s target of training one crore people in Artificial Intelligence, Modi said India’s talent pool, combined with the experience and capabilities of global industry leaders, could unlock significant opportunities for both the country and participating companies. He said India should aspire to be among the early leaders in emerging technologies, noting that the country’s semiconductor ecosystem has already made significant progress and is now transitioning from foundational groundwork to a phase of greater scale and opportunity.

The Prime Minister reiterated the government’s commitment to maintaining a predictable and responsive policy environment for the sector, stressing that policies must continue to evolve in line with technological advancements and industry requirements. He invited industry leaders present to share suggestions on policy and administrative measures, assuring them that their input would be given due consideration as the government works to further strengthen the sector’s competitiveness.

CEOs and senior representatives at the roundtable appreciated the government’s sustained efforts to build India’s semiconductor capabilities, pointing to visible progress in manufacturing, design, infrastructure and talent development over recent years. Several expressed confidence in the opportunities emerging under the India Semiconductor Mission’s second phase, known as ISM 2.0, and in the country’s potential to build capabilities spanning manufacturing, research and development, advanced technologies and supporting industries across the semiconductor value chain.

The roundtable was attended by CEOs, heads and representatives of major global organisations including SEMI, Micron, Infineon, Applied Materials, ASML, Merck, Tokyo Electron, FujiFilm, AMD, Intel, Tata Electronics, Lam Research, Rapidus, NXP, Foxconn, Semi Conductor Devices, Advantest, Celesta Capital, CG Power and IBM Research, underlining the scale of international industry interest in India’s expanding semiconductor ambitions.
