Livasa Hospitals highlighted new frontiers in interventional cardiology at a press conference held in Srinagar, showcasing advances that now allow complex and high-risk cardiac patients, once considered difficult to treat through conventional means, to be managed through minimally invasive procedures.
Dr. Harinder K Bali, Chairman of Cardiac Sciences at Livasa Hospitals, said technological advances, improved techniques and multidisciplinary cardiac care are transforming the management of complex cardiovascular disease, opening new treatment avenues for patients previously deemed high-risk or inoperable through traditional surgical routes. With more than 38 years of experience and over 20,000 coronary interventions as primary operator, Dr. Bali has been associated with several significant developments in interventional cardiac care in the region, including the introduction of primary angioplasty for managing heart attacks.
He outlined a broad spectrum of advanced interventions now available to appropriately selected patients, including primary angioplasty, complex percutaneous coronary intervention and CHIP interventions, transcatheter aortic valve implantation and replacement, cardiac resynchronisation therapy, implantable cardioverter defibrillator placement, carotid and subclavian artery stenting, aortic stenting, peripheral arterial angioplasty, below-knee interventions, endovascular stent grafting for aortic aneurysms and selected dissections, and Impella-supported high-risk coronary interventions, representing a wide range of options beyond conventional open-heart surgery.
Dr. Bali emphasised the importance of individualised treatment planning, particularly for patients with complex coronary artery disease, previous bypass surgery, advanced age, heart failure, multiple comorbidities and those who may not be suitable candidates for conventional surgery. He stressed that advances in interventional cardiology are not intended to replace surgery in every case, but rather to expand the range of evidence-based options available to carefully selected patients based on their individual clinical profile.
