Security forces killed two militants during an intelligence based operation in the Brattal area of Udhampur district overnight between September 16 and 17, the Army’s White Knight Corps confirmed on Thursday. The operation, designated Operation Sohan, was launched after confirmed intelligence pointed to the presence of militants in the general vicinity of Brattal, prompting a coordinated response from multiple security agencies operating in the Jammu region.

Troops from the Army’s White Knight Corps, the Jammu and Kashmir Police and the Central Reserve Police Force jointly conducted the operation despite hostile weather, difficult terrain and poor visibility, conditions that have historically complicated counter insurgency operations in this stretch of the Jammu hills. Officials said the operation resulted in the neutralisation of two militants, with arms and ammunition recovered from the encounter site, a recovery that will likely factor into the identification process as the investigation proceeds.

The operation remains active, with search and surveillance continuing in the Brattal Sohan and Khubban areas of Majalta as security forces work to ascertain whether additional militants remain in the area. The forested and difficult terrain around Udhampur has periodically served as a transit corridor linked to militant movement between the Kashmir valley and the Jammu region, making sustained search operations in the area a recurring feature of the security calendar in recent years.

The identities of the two militants killed have not yet been officially disclosed, and the Army’s public statement has not confirmed any claims circulating about their nationality or affiliation with a particular militant organisation. Security officials have historically urged caution against premature identification claims until forensic and intelligence verification is complete, a process that typically follows encounters of this nature before any formal disclosure is made.

The operation adds to a series of counter insurgency actions in the Jammu region through 2026, part of a broader effort by security forces to disrupt infiltration routes and militant activity in districts that had, until recent years, seen comparatively lower levels of insurgent movement than the Kashmir valley. Further details, including the identity and affiliation of the slain militants, are awaited as the search operation in Udhampur continues.
